Nicholas Hely Hutchinson English, b. 1955

Born in 1955, Nicholas Hely Hutchinson studied at St. Martins School of Art and Bristol Polytechnic (Fine Art).

Since his first one-man exhibition in 1984 Nicholas has exhibited consistently in London, Dublin and Hong Kong. His paintings have increasingly become more in demand and now feature in many private and corporate collections.

He was represented by the Portland Gallery from 1997-2022, and is now represented by The John Martin Gallery. A range of cards and posters featuring his work have been published by the Art Group, The Canns Down Press, The Almanac Gallery and Paperlink.

Nicholas has two grown-up children, and lives with his wife, and two lurchers in Dorset. He gets much of his inspiration from the surrounding countryside and the coast. He also travels to some of his favourite places to paint – particularly Venice, Paris, the West of Ireland and Cornwall.

  This is the gallery's first exhibition by the painter Nicholas Hely Hutchinson with a show of recent work made on trips around the West country and East Anglia. Hely Hutchinson is fascinated by windswept coastlines and open spaces, giving him the freedom as a painter to scrutinise the effects of light with remarkable clarity. Often accompanied by his two lurchers, Hely Hutchinson's paintings sparkle with his delight in the natural world and the joy of being outdoors.
