Artist Statement:
Louise McClary was born in Penzance in 1958, studied at Penzance School of Art and now lives beside the Helford Estuary. Her work shares with other Cornish artists like Lanyon and Nicholson, that keen awareness of the separation between earth, sea and sky. A background palette of rich, dark colours is set against patches of bright light, revealing in turn fragments of human existence, plant forms and pathways; elements that she refers to as 'the history of the marks made upon and in the earth'. There is also a sense in her paintings of light as a spiritual metaphor and appropriately a group of her paintings will be exhibited at St Paul's and Truro Cathedrals later this year. Her most recent exhibition was held at the Newlyn Art Gallery in 2003.
