Herman trained in the École des Beaux Arts, Warsaw, 1930-1932, before travelling to Brussels, Glasgow and LondonJosef Herman was born in the Warsaw Ghetto in 1911, the son of a cobbler. Leaving school at 13 he became a typesetter going on to train at the Warsaw School of Art as a graphic artist. In 1938 he left Warsaw and moved to Belgium before moving on to France and finally Britain. He settled in Glasgow where he met fellow Pole, Jankel Adler and the Scottish painter, J.D Fergusson.In 1943 he was invited to share a two-man show at Alex Reid and Lefevre with L.S Lowry, then largely unknown. He then moved to Wales where he was to live for the next 11 years painting the mining community of Ystradgynlais. Though Herman was to live in Suffolk from 1961 to 1972, this painting of Dunwich in Suffolk was painted after he moved to London.Since 1947 he has featured in numerous exhibitions in London, Switzerland and Germany1956 - retrospective exhibition at the Whitechapel GalleryPermanent collections include Bristol, Manchester, and the Tate Collection, London.
