Between 1938 and 1940 Philipson was taught at the Edinburgh College of Art. He participated in numerous collective exhibitions, notably those devoted to contemporary Scottish art.

He had one-man shows in Edinburgh (1954, 58, 61) and London (1960, 62), His works feature in public collections across Britain and can also be found in the USA.
