Piper was taught at the Richmond School of Art, the Royal College of Art and finally the Slade School in London, from 1925 to 1930.

He was involved in important collaborative exhibitions of contemporary English painting, notably the British Council exhibition organised in Paris, 1945, and the exhibition of modern British paintings from the Tate Gallery, Paris, 1946. He mounted numerous one-man shows in Britain and in New York from 1949. The Tate Gallery organised his retrospective in 1983 and a recent survey of his work from the 1940's was held at the Imperial War Museum.

His work hangs in public collections in London (Tate Collection), New York, Toledo and Toronto.
