Nationality: British

HILDA MARGERY CLARKE BA (Hons) FRSA, was initially trained privately in Manchester and later studied drawing, printing and sculpture at Southampton College of Art. In 1975, she spent a month full-time at the Ruskin School of Art Print Workshop, Oxford, under Chris Orr and Norman Ackroyd. Although favouring oil-paint, she works in a wide variety of media: oil-pastel, watercolour, print, pen-&-ink and pencil, often in unconventional ways.
As Director of "The First" Gallery in Southampton (founded by her to support professional artists and craftsmen), she is better known as curator of national touring exhibitions than as an artist. Since the 60s, she has had solo shows in Southampton, Winchester and has occasionally exhibited in mixed shows in London and the provinces. In 2001 she had a large retrospective exhibition in Ramsgate and next year has been invited to have solo shows in Southampton City Art Gallery and John Martin of London.
