David Crone - New Work

12 May - 4 June 2005

David Crone is one of the most influential painters working in Northern Ireland. Born in Belfast in 1937 his early work was entirely concerned with the City and his fractured images powerfully conveyed the reality of the divided lives of its inhabitants. In 1994 he moved to the rural location of County Down and began to paint the landscapes and details of his garden. As Aidan Dunne points out in the catalogue introduction" in pictorial terms, there is no urban-rural divide. He is attentive to the patchwork, composite nature of the pastoral environment ...". These new paintings for the artist's first London exhibition reveal a consumate colourist whose detailed observation of the natural world make him a worthy successor to Piper and Sutherland.

Crone has work in the Arts Councils of Northern Ireland, Ireland and England and in the Irish Museum of Modern Art. A catalogue will be published on May 5th and is available on request.
