In January, Andrew Gifford was invited to take part in the inaugural artist residency at the breathtaking Eagle’s Nest Retreat, perched high above the Pacific Ocean in Costa Rica’s Guanacaste province. Situated at the heart of an ambitious biodiversity restoration project, the residency offered Gifford a unique opportunity to paint Costa Rica’s richly diverse tropical forests, including both rainforests and cloud forests.

This small exhibition brings together studies made on location in Costa Rica, shown alongside four large-scale canvases completed on his return.

In recent years, Gifford has created immersive paintings of Britain’s woodland and scrubland environments, his work evolving in dialogue with the growing interest in rewilding. The Costa Rica residency coincided with the development of his latest project: a series focused on the remaining temperate rainforests along the west coasts of Britain and Ireland. This body of work will culminate in a major exhibition in November 2025.
