Exhibition catalogue from Fred Yates's show 'Ever Onward' in 2020
Fred Yates was represented by the John Martin Gallery for 20 years until his death in 2008 at the age of 86. After serving in the Second World War Fred trained as a teacher before giving it up to follow his desire to be a painter. Fred spent an almost nomadic life moving along the south coast and all round Cornwall where many people came to know his work. Cornish landscape and beach scenes peopled with a myriad of characters realised in a distinctive hand coupled with his charming yet eccentric character gave him a broad base of collectors. Later years were spent in Southern France painting and exploring Provence relishing the light and colour of the mountains, trees and villages of Provence
