“In the British Museum I always try and visit the Parthenon Marbles … on this occasion I was the only person in the gallery, just before the doors to the museum opened…I could imagine, and even almost hear how the cavalcade of horsemen and the women driving cows to sacrifice might have sounded had I actually witnessed such an event in ancient times. The clattering of hooves, the mooing of cows, the shouts of people, the music, the smell, the heat.  All these things sprang to life in the silence that surrounded me.”
