Makiko Nakamura: Paintings from Ireland - Spirit Studios Suffolk
A fascination with the work of Samuel Beckett took Makiko Nakamura to Ireland in 1999 where she lived for the next fourteen years. Her time in Dublin was a period she regards as her happiest as well as the most important in the development of her painting and when she returned to Kyoto in 2013 she left behind work in the Irish Museum of Modern Art as well two paintings commissioned for the Gate Theatre.
In this exhibition we have focussed on these last years in Dublin, a group of paintings based around a palette of muted colours which, over several months, were layered in a repeating grid pattern before being slowly erased back through the paint surfaces. The tightly controlled technique she developed she likens to archaeology; the emotional and artistic decisions of preceding months reappearing as tantalising glimpses through the painting’s history.
