Francis Hamel
The Oxford Paintings
27 March - 25 April
Over the past 25 years, Francis Hamel has created over 100 paintings of Oxford, a city he first fell in love with as a child and later as a student at the Ruskin School of Art. In 2024, he returned to his former college, Magdalen, as artist in residence, giving him a unique vantage point from which to paint the city, its parks, and water meadows. An exhibition of Hamel’s recent paintings of Oxford will be held at the John Martin Gallery from 27 March to 26 April, with a preview at Magdalen College from 13 to 18 March. The exhibition will be accompanied by the publication of The Oxford Paintings, which features Hamel’s work alongside an anthology of writings about the city, selected by Ronald J. Caffrey
